Knowledge is the most important product of the 21st century. Participation in its creation and transfer through a process of education is one of the greatest privileges. Yet, creating space for the successful performance of these processes is a major challenge. For decades, schools have slowly morphed into prison-like facilities with artificially lit rooms and barricaded playgrounds. However, the trend is beginning to shift. With a highlight on sustainable design, a focus on safety and an increased demand on positive learning environments, my intention was to create inspiring and livable primary school.

Primary school „Šip“, located in one of the rapidly growing neighbourhoods Sarajevo, is project requested by major urban plan for the city area, calculated for approx. 600 pupils between seven and fourteen years. Divided in 16 units, with all following contents, this school is ideal educational environment within existing infrastructure. It is designed in the way to inspire and stimulate the best feedback from the students and scholars. Regardless of what the students are alike and into what they are involved, they must be subject to the equal treatment of the school as an institution, as a construction facility and as a second home. At specific point, building itself becomes a teacher, as source of teaching. Furthermore, if our school is teaching us to be not friendly to different kind of “normal”, to people with certain disabilities and treat them as undesirable target group, we need to reconsider the standards of education as well as the standards imposed by modern society. Schools should not only respond to the needs of students with disabilities, marginalized from and by the communities, but introduce them to the all advantages of learning process, because, in fact, community is the heart of the design and must integrated everyone, without stressed out differences.
